The ultimate goal of the Balanced Fashion Agency is to create a more conscious fashion industry. This month we have been purposefully ignoring NY Fashion Week as a way to disregard the rules this industry has been making us play by for decades. If we want the change to happen, the action needs to come within. According to True Cost movie from 2015, the average American generates 82 pounds of textile waste each year. And the industry situation hadn't gone any better ever since. Fashion brands create so much more clothes than consumers need, so here's where the brainwashing happens which making us feel like we constantly need to buy new stuff. We as customers & industry professionals have more power than we think & if we make conscious choices together, with the same vision in mind - we will see the changes in the industry faster than we may imagine. There's a power in a synergy that Balanced Fashion is set to foster.
On September 27th we are kicking off our first Clothing Swapping event & partnering with swap events experts at Global Fashion Exchange to make it a seamless experience for everyone. The event series will take place at The Canvas by Querencia Studio. Clothing swaps are the most environmentally-friendly way to satisfy our craving for new items while making space in our wardrobes by letting go of gently worn clothing & accessories that we no longer need. Why support the industry & buy new stuff when you can get something that feels new for you free of charge? In order to break the vicious circle of the industry, we need to remove ourselves from it first. Again, the change starts within.
On the evening of 27th, we will host a talk on Conscious Shopping presented by Nataliya Makulova, a conscious business consultant & Balanced Fashion Founder. We will also have a panel talk with some of the influencers in the sustainable space in NYC focused on conscious consumption. (Confirmed speakers will be announced soon)
For those who would like to participate in the clothing swap, you must bring 3-5 of your most gently worn, now unwanted items to the panel on Thursday night, Sept. 27th & come back for the swapping day, Saturday, Sept. 29th. The ticket price will cover event organization expenses.
If you can't make it to the panel, please come half an hour before the swap is open so that we can merchandise your items.
SWAPPING RULES:
1 - 2 - 1 SWAP
Meaning that if you bring one item you only can take one item. This is a way to keep it fair & easy, also free from hoarders! If you bring 6 items, you can take 6. If you bring 2 fast fashion & 4 designerlevel. The same rules apply: 2 fast fashion & 4 designerlevel. Our merchandisers will take note of brands & quality of items you're going to bring.
Remember that our community consists of conscious shoppers, so we expect only items to of high quality to be exchanged during the swap. Please use your own discretion & imagine if someone would still like to wear that Zara dress you bought 3 years ago. Designer & contemporary branded items are preferable.
CHECK IN / CHECK OUTSwappers are required to check in on the evening of the Panel event. Here they receive a ticket with the number & quality of items they are allowed to take home. Then you come back to the swap on Friday or Saturday, select new items & when you are ready to exit, you will need to show your ticket & the new items to a swap representative to make sure they are within the 1-2-1 rules.
Please note that all items left over at the end of the clothing swap will be distributed to charities across the city.
