Digital Platform Work in the US & Latin America: A Challenge for the Working Class of Our Days
Digital platforms have risen in the world in the last decade & quickly they conquered big spaces in our everyday lives. However, many studies have demonstrated how these platforms can contribute to intensifying precarious work. These processes happen in the world, but they have some differences considering the region of the globe. In this panel Fellipe Coelho-Lima andAndrew Wolf debate the particularity of the advance of digital platforms in the Global North & South, considering the context of the US & Brazil. They will discuss the challenges for workers & how they are fighting for better conditions in this kind of work.

Speakers:
Fellipe Coelho-Lima is a professor at the Psychology Department of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil). His research & teaching activities focus on the effects of the new precarious forms of work in the lives of workers & the ways they resist. Currently, he has been working on the topic of work on digital platforms & the ideology of work. He coordinates the international research "Nexus of Uberization: Analyzes from the Workers' Perspective."
Andrew Wolf is currently a research fellow at the Workplace Justice Lab at Rutgers University's School of Management & Labor Relations & he teaches at the City University of New York's School of Labor & Urban Studies. He studies how the labor movement & governments are responding to the gig economy, with a focus on the impacts of app based employment for immigrant populations. His research helped inform the New York City Council on legislation to provide minimum employment standards for app-delivery workers & has been featured in the New York Times, NPR, Bloomberg, Thompson Reuters, & New York Magazine.
Commentator: Ruth Milkman, Distinguished Professor of Sociology & History at the CUNY Graduate Center & Labor Studies Chair at the CUNY School of Labor & Urban Studies. She is the author, most recently of Immigrant Labor & the New Precariat (Polity 2020)
Moderator: Mila Burns, Associate Director of CUNY's Center for Latin American, Caribbean & Latino Studies & Assistant Professor at Lehman College's Department of Latin American & Latino Studies.
