On paper, it sounded great to have world-famous academics involved in designing the Earth's defense systems, in the event of a collision with near-earth objects. But when the alarms went off, & it was time to use the system, it was a spherical defense grid of uniform density. The operators were expected to do everything in spherical coordinates, as this allowed an "elegant" software architecture, saving several microseconds a minute of computer time. On the other hand, it's "do this" or "rocks fall, everyone dies".
