What we'll cover
Structuring Equity & Comp. We'll talk about best practices for putting the co-founder relationship on paper. One big piece of this is what the balance of equity should look like, depending on the number of co-founders & the stage of the startup at the time the new co-founder is coming aboard.
How to meet potential co-founders. This is handily one of the top grievances of early-stage founders. We'll talk about what avenues are available - & which are best suited to you. We'll cover founder "dating" apps & organizations, in-person networking & cold outreach. We'll also talk about how to use your existing networking to strategically put out feelers.
Timing. The decision to look for a co-founder, & who that co-founder should be, can change depending how far along you are. We'll discuss when it makes sense to start networking yourself (and your idea).
The Job Description. We'll take a deep-dive on the qualifications. We'll discuss what skill sets & experience are critical in the early stages of a startup & those that will be necessary as you scale.
The Fit. For one of the most important relationships of your life, it pays to be thoughtful about the personal characteristics & behaviors that will be a good fit for you & your growing team. Ex. tact, EQ, empathy, communication skills, warmth, etc. The fit will be about both identifying personal compatibility & finding partners that are strong where you're weak.
What are the red flags? Theirs & yours.
Vetting potential co-founders. For many reasons, the process of vetting a co-founder is quite different from hiring for other roles. What questions are important? How to you vet for personal compatibility? Is it kosher to ask for references? Who else should be involved in the process?
Vetting the person you already know. It's quite possible you already have someone in mind for the co-founder role - or you're already having discussions with them. Is there a way to apply rigor to this process?
Defining roles & establishing expectations. How prescriptive & detailed should you & your co-founder(s) be about your roles in the startup?
