We know our data is collected, but what exactly is it used for?

Tune in as we learn what inclusive data collection strategies could unlock for womxn & marginalized communities.

Mind the Gap is back, & this month, we're talking about inclusive data collection.

Inclusive data collection means educating users on how their information is harvested, how to protect their information, & accurately surveying communities to ensure that economic opportunities, products, & services are marketed equitably across diverse populations.

Join us for a discussion around inclusive data collection strategies in an environment increasingly connected by emerging mediums like 5G, & explore what opportunities are unlocked when data is collected with user privacy & inclusivity in mind.

For Elena Elkina, privacy hits close to home. Her childhood experiences in the Soviet Union morphed into a driving need to safeguard privacy of businesses & individuals, especially those who are unaware of their own risk & vulnerability. The city Elkina grew up in was literally a secret - it was not on the map. Largely populated with government-chosen software engineers, like her parents, city residents were under constant surveillance. Because of the lack of privacy & restricted freedom (a special passport was required to leave the city), & relentlessly curious about the outside, 12-year-old Elkina decided to become a lawyer when she grew up to save the world. Years later, with a law degree in hand, Elkina landed a job at a Los Angeles bank managing data protection, privacy, compliance & identity theft just as online banking began to emerge. Elkina then shifted her interest to healthcare while pursuing an American law degree at Berkeley, where she had the good fortune to study with eminent information privacy law authority Chris Jay Hoofnagle. Hoofnagle & Elkina's boss at McKesson, who recognized Elkina's constant need to be challenged, inspired her to start her own privacy consultancy, Aleada.

Over the past decade, Elena has focused on creating enterprise-level global (i.e., European Union, Asia Pacific, Canada) privacy & data protection programs, including developing & implementing regulatory frameworks, risk/gap assessments, maturity models, long-term roadmaps, & data protection policies; designing & employing de-identification & Privacy by Design data handling processes; reviewing products to assess digital marketing compliance; & building privacy & security training & awareness programs. She has worked closely with development & business teams to build cloud, web, & mobile consumer & business products across the globe.

Vidhya Seran works in the field of Volumetric Video & efficient & secured transmission of high capacity video over 5G networks. Prior to joining Verizon, Vidhya was a Vice President of Applied Research for A2Zlogix, where her research activities covered video compression & optimization, network security, virtual reality, Super resolution & 3D film technologies. She earned a Ph.D. in Wavelet Video Coding from the University at Buffalo , LEAD executive management certificate from Stanford & she is working towards her MBA wth Geis UIUC. Her academic achievements include: holds 15 patents; presenter & publisher of 12 journal & conference articles related to video coding; a US postdoctoral fellow for video analysis for MRI scanned brain image. Vidhya also serves as an Advisory Board Member for City of Irving Libraries. She has presented in Anita B Grace Hopper Conference, Women in Data Science Conference, IEEE Conferences, SC, CES & NAB.
