Each of the three panelists took a different path to leadership, & all of them have remarkable careers that can inform tomorrow's leaders how to succeed.
Hayley Barna is a Venture Partner based in New York. Prior to joining First Round she co-founded Birchbox, the leading beauty & grooming retailer seed funded by First Round in 2010. She served as Co-CEO at Birchbox for five years from conception & launch to growing the business to over a million monthly subscribers. She raised over $70M in venture capital, expanded the business internationally & launched new businesses & channels like men's & retail stores. Hayley oversaw key functions including marketing, operations, strategy & technology.
Before launching Birchbox in 2010, Hayley received her MBA from Harvard BusinessSchool. She started her career as a strategy consultant at Bain & Company in New York. She also spent time at two very different ends of the retail spectrum through her roles in strategy at Christie's in Hong Kong & product management at Amazon in Seattle. In addition to her current role at First Round, Hayley is a board member at Birchbox, RAB Lighting & Madison Reed.
Shan-Lyn Ma is CEO & Co-Founder of Zola, the wedding company reinventing the wedding planning & registry experience by combining compassionate customer service with modern tools & technology. Zola launched in 2013 & quickly became the fastest growing wedding company in the country. Today, Zola carries over 500 brands-from registry staples to up-and- coming designers-and over half a million couples have used the platform. The company's suite of tools includes: the premier all-in-one wedding registry, free wedding websites, a guest-list manager, customizable checklist & beautiful save the dates & wedding invitations.
Before starting her company, Shan was Chief Product Officer of Chloe + Isabel. Prior to that, Shan was Gilt Groupe's first Product Lead where she led key new business launches, including their successful foray into mobile. Additionally, she was Creator & General Manager of Gilt Taste, the brand's food & wine division. Before her time at Gilt, Shan held product & marketing roles at Yahoo!.
As the Chief Product Officer at Ellevest, Alexandria keeps the team moving & driven toward one goal: Making it easy & engaging for women to invest in their future. She outlines the pain points women have when it comes to investing & makes sure that Ellevest is solving those issues with goal-planning & investing features. Alexandria was featured, along with the rest of the Ellevest founding team, on the cover of Money Magazine in March 2018. Before Ellevest, Alexandria was at Weight Watchers International, where she led the launch of a new line of business called Personal Coaching & her team was honored with Webby Awards for the vibrant & active Weight Watchers Community.
When she's not thinking about how to make investing easier, Alexandria enjoys paddle- boarding, traveling the world, & hanging out with her daughter Juliette.
