Jonathan Haidt & Jason Steinhauer address the Crisis of Social Media. Moderated by: Cleo Abram

About this event
There is immense power in the distribution & delivery of information, & social media has democratized that ability so that nearly everyone has access. The scale & reach of these systems can provide platforms for social change & the tools to mobilize movements across the globe. However, this flood of knowledge is also regularly misused for darker purposes to control & confuse. So, how do we decide what power our information holds? How do we access it, evaluate it properly, & then determine how to act? How can we reclaim our autonomy when we're drowning in information?

Jonathan Haidt is a social psychologist at New York University's Stern School of Business. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1992. Haidt's research examines the intuitive foundations of morality, & how morality varies across cultural & political divisions. Haidt is the author of The Happiness Hypothesis (2006) & of The New York Times bestsellers The Righteous Mind (2012) & The Coddling of the American Mind (2018, with Greg Lukianoff). He has given four TED talks. In 2019 he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Since 2018 he has been studying the contributions of social media to the decline of teen mental health & the rise of political dysfunction. He is currently writing Life After Babel: Adapting to a world we can no longer share.

Jason Steinhauer is a best-selling author, public historian, podcast host, founder of the History Communication Institute, creator of History Club & a Global Fellow at The Wilson Center. He writes & speaks about how social media & the web are shaping what we know about history.

Cleo Constantine Abram, otherwise known as Cleo Abram, is an American video journalist, YouTuber, & TV & video producer, well-known for producing TV shows like Answered, Explained (2018), & Glad You Asked (2019).

Cleo Abram is also known for being a video journalist who is passionate tech., & anchors the show tagged Huge If True.
