Talk: Breaking Up with Massive Tables via Partitioning
Similar to memory configurations & Active-Active, when you find yourself Googling "How to partition a Postgres table", you're usually in a tight spot. However, although real-life use cases for partitioning typically start with a large, production table where uptime is critical, most documentation & blogs only cover setting up new partitioned tables -- ignoring the delicate work necessary to migrate safely with minimal downtime.
This talk actionably addresses that knowledge gap: covering multiple ways to partition large, production tables.
This talk will discuss:
Basic Postgres partitioning internals
Choosing between partitioning strategies (with examples)
Rules of thumb, & when NOT to partition
Methods of migrating a live, production table to a partitioned table (with examples & demo code)
Partitioning observability & maintenance
Speaker: Chelsea Dole
Chelsea Dole is a Database Engineer at a hedge fund with expertise in Postgres & database platform building. Before her current role, she worked in the startup world (most recently at Brex).
She is an active speaker in the Postgres community & has delivered talks across the US, Europe, & Asia. Chelsea also serves as an organizer for PostgresConf NYC.
She got her start as a DBA being thrown in the deep end, & seeks to present practical internals talks which speak to engineers in the grey area between infra engineer & database person.
