"Fire in Paradise"
This documentary short chronicles the Camp Fire tragedy in Paradise, CA, beginning the morning of November 8, 2018. The film charts the course & consequences of the harrowing disaster - part of a terrifying new trend in California wildfires, & the deadliest fire in the United States in over 100 years - through personal interviews & first-hand video footage from survivors & emergency responders.
"3 Minute Hug"
On May 12, 2018, the border between El Paso, Texas & Ciudad Juarez, Mexico was opened temporarily for a breathlessly awaited reunion. On a barren embankment along the Rio Bravo, family members who had been denied asylum, deported, or separated for more than 10 years were allowed to meet at the border for a precious few minutes. Organized by the Border Network for Human Rights, the Hugs Not Walls reunification event gave over 300 separated families the opportunity to connect - to embrace, kiss, & lovingly admonish each other as only families can. Directed by Everardo Gonzlez & Executive Produced by Gael Garcia Bernal, A 3 Minute Hug captures the elation & crushing heartbreak these families share in their all-too-brief moments together.
"Ghosts of Sugar Land"
Ghosts of Sugar Land follows a group of suburban Muslim friends as they trace the disappearance of their friend Mark, who is suspected of joining ISIS. A social misfit throughout his teens, Mark converted to Islam before entering college. But his beliefs took an increasingly worrisome turn when he began alienating his friends & leaving cryptic notes on social media before he disappeared altogether. Winner of the Short Film Jury Award for Nonfiction at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, Ghosts of Sugar Land stirringly traces the guilt, fear, & sadness of these men as they try to piece together what happened to their friend.
