Authorea is excited to announce our 5th NYC Open Science Meetup on Thursday, September 22nd, 2016!

We welcome Chair of Columbia Biological Sciences and neuroscientist, Dr. Stuart Firestein! He is the author of "Ignorance: How It Drives Science", where he writes that conducting science is something like searching for a black cat in a dark room very difficult, especially when, as is often the case, it turns out there is no cat. In his 2013 Ted Talk, "The Pursuit of Ignorance", he gets to the heart of science as it is really practiced and suggests that we should value what we don't know or "high-quality ignorance"just as much as what we know.

Stuart is also the author of "Failure: Why Science Is So Successful", where he elaborates on how success requires embracing failure; how great discoveries arise out of failed attempts that continue to provoke and puzzle.

Dr. Firestein and his lab colleagues study the vertebrate olfactory system, seeking answers to the fundamental human question: "How do I smell?". He also serves as an advisor for the Alfred P. Sloan Foundations program for the Public Understanding of Science and has been awarded the Lenfest Distinguished Columbia Faculty Award for excellence in scholarship and teaching.

Wine, beer and snacks will be served from 6pm-7pm.
Dr. Firestein will take the stage at 7pm.

A very special "thank you!" to Rise for donating the awesome event space!

See you all there!!
