The political season is in high gear. From the presidency to the school board, candidates are seeking votes.

Go beyond campaign finance and learn how to check the background of a political candidate. Well talk land records, financial disclosures, corporation records and all the other places you should look to get a complete look at the activities of someone running for political office.

And while this session will focus on backgrounding political candidates, what youll learn will also help you beef up your everyday reporting, too.

This workshop is open to third-semester students of the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.

Instructor:

Ryan McNeill is a journalist assigned to the Reuters global data team. He joined Reuters in 2012 and has worked on stories covering sea level rise, the underground market for adopted children, income inequality, New Jersey Transits bungled preparations for Hurricane Sandy, and the explosion at a fertilizer plant in Texas.

His data analysis was part of The Child Exchange, a nominated finalist for the 2014 Pulitzer Prize in investigative journalism.

He has covered issues involving local, state and federal government, including two sessions of the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

He has previously worked for The Oklahoman, South Florida Sun-Sentinel and The Dallas Morning News.
