GitHub is looking for a Legal Operations Manager to join our innovative, tech savvy legal team. This role will sit within our small, but mighty, Legal Operations Virtual Team (vTeam), which is part of GitHubs Corporate, External, & Legal Affairs (CELA) team. CELA has been growing rapidly to scale with the business, & were looking for agile, collaborative, innovative professionals to help drive our high-performing culture in an environment deeply focused on diversity, inclusion, & belonging.  The right candidate will possess a creative entrepreneurial mind, willingness to learn & grow, a keen attention to detail; a self-starter & strong collaborator who can operate nimbly in a fast-paced environment, managing a myriad of legal support projects with skill, poise, & enthusiasm. Tech skills are also an absolute must since this role will work with GitHub tools to collaborate, ship, & innovate. . You will provide critical support for the entire CELA team, with a focus on strategic & operational initiatives to improve team efficiencies.  You will also have the opportunity to take on new & varied roles as we continue to scale & grow.


  • Process Improvement: Analyze existing processes for continuous improvements.  Work with departmental personnel to develop process improvements that promote cost reductions & other identified inefficiencies. 
  • Metrics & Analytics: Report on key operational metrics for the CELA team that will better assist the leadership team with decision-making. 
  • Collaborate with the Team Lead to build Objectives & Key Results (OKRs) for the Legal Operations team. 
  • Team Enablement: Identify & implement tools & technologies to streamline new or existing practices, as well as managing design, rollout, & training for new systems.
  • Outside Counsel Management: Work closely with Team Lead to select & manage outside law firms.  Provide ongoing support with respect to alternative fee arrangements, budgets, compliance with billing guidelines, & the overall partnership between vendors & legal operations to manage outside counsel usage & spend. 
  • Budgeting: Oversee budget & reporting requirements using our e-billing system. Leverage best practices across the CELA functions, & collaborate closely with other business lines to develop & produce reporting that drives increased financial visibility & accountability. 
  • General Operations: Collaborate with cross-functional teams including the Office of the COO, Finance, Procurement, & HR, as well as various other business units.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of seven (7) years of strong legal operations experience.
  • Commitment to professionalism & personal growth, with a strong sense of collaboration & teamwork as a path to success.
  • Excellent sense of humor.
  • Flexibility in a face-paced & remote/decentralized work environment.
  • Ability to scale & grow within the organization.
  • Strong organization skills & the ability to prioritize, manage & execute on numerous projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication skills, judgment, & diplomacy.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous legal operations experience in a corporate legal department. 
  • A basic understanding of software coding or comfort with new technology adoption.
  • Experience within a software start-up and/or enterprise software company. IT & systems experience & skills is a must. 
  • Proactive, entrepreneurial approach to recognizing needs, solving problems, & anticipating issues, & problem solving. 
  • Understanding of financial management principles, preferably have previously worked with an e-billing system. 
  • Experience with developing metrics & KPIs.
