As an Engineering Director at Alfred, youll be responsible for leading a skilled & growing team of engineers. Youll work with Product, Design, & Operations to build the software that sits at the intersection between technology & the real world.  Its your job to develop, hire, nurture, & build the people who make that intersection better.

As the leader of a growing team, youll be responsible for the technology choices, data architecture, & scalability of our platform. You will advance our engineering philosophy & practices to lead the construction of a new type of service. Alfred offers the opportunity to work closely with all aspects of a multi-sided business: our operations team, our customers andthe stars of the showthe Alfred Home Managers.

How youll contribute to #OneTeam

  • Lead goal setting, planning, & drive business impact of engineering groups
  • Produce & deliver a strategic, technical vision identifying gaps in ownership & negotiating wholl own them going forward
  • Build & grow an amazing diverse engineering organization with a strong culture of balancing excellence with agility 
  • Serve as a coach, mentor, & advocate for the managers & engineers in the group - leveraging one on ones (1:1), standards, & an eye towards future opportunities to support their growth
  • Scale the organization by investing & growing a strong bench of senior technical leaders & managers within the team
  • Ensure the right people are in the right job through creating leadership opportunities, hiring, performance management, & generally caring about the team
  • Work with engineering leaders as well as cross functional leads (including product, marketing, data,  & design) to create & execute on product roadmaps
  • Work closely with other engineering leaders to evolve & continually improve Alfreds engineering culture 
  • Plan & project manage across engineering sprints
  • Address obstacles proactively so the team maintains a predictable & sustainable pace
  • Advise on architecture decisions
  • Lead code & architecture reviews

Who you are 

  • 3+ years of experience in managing managers, 5+ years of engineering management experience, & 10+ years of engineering experience
  • Experience in building & maturing-distributed engineering teams across three countries & several timezones & infrastructure in a startup environment
  • Strong analytical skills & a sense of ownership/accountability
  • Experience in building teams, hiring, coaching, mentoring, & motivating staff through learning & development with a 
  • Proven track record of recruiting both managers & engineers
  • Comfortable collaborating with groups outside of engineering & translating high-level business objectives into technical strategy
  • Ability to balance business needs, a sense of urgency, & shipping high quality & pragmatic solutions
  • Experience in Internet & mobile platforms - web based technology & mobile development (iOS/Android)
  • Exceptional project planning/execution skills including estimating, scheduling, & executing on committed schedules
  • Demonstrated experience in building, delivering & operating products & services in a consumer-centric space
  • Strong verbal/written communication & interpersonal skills
  • Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
