Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a mobile phone into a credit card reader. Our communications team is made up of tough, quick-witted, entrepreneurial, & intellectually-curious people. We communicate to the world Square's purpose of economic empowerment because we believe everyone should be able to participate & thrive in the economy. We are looking for a consumer communications expert to join our Brand & Purpose Communications team. Our team combines data, design, social, & comms, we educate our audiences to help them thrive in the economy, while keeping Square at the forefront of important public conversations. You must be a creative thinker who knows how to execute & deliver on big ideas & is comfortable being part of a team pushing the boundaries of storytelling. You will bring a strategic & creative communications perspective & discipline to our team, & create campaigns, pitches, & narratives that position Square as a thought leader, with topical data & insights into a variety of subject-areas relevant to business owners & consumers alike. This position can be based in either San Francisco, Oakland, or New York.
Develop press strategies that speak to Square's purpose of economic empowerment & raise brand awareness, & provide strategic guidance for how data is used to inform external narratives.
Seek & unearth macro- & microeconomic trends related to our industry & sellers, ultimately informing external-facing projects.
Identify & build relationships with our seller community to help further develop content & media angles.
Partner with Government Relations & Policy, Marketing, & Creative teams across Square.
Prep, manage, & execute press briefings with Square spokespeople, third party experts, & our sellers.
Create strong media lists that include national business, vertical trades, local, & lifestyle outlets.
Own the creation of written materials, including press releases, data reports, white papers, briefing docs, communications plans, FAQs, blog posts, & other collateral.
Collaborate with our design, social, comms, & data teammates to drive creative data journalism projects that highlight Square's sellers.
Strong media relations skills that have driven national news cycles, specifically someone with a rolodex of consumer & lifestyle media contacts.
5+ years of relevant work experience (experience working with consumer brands either in house or at an agency preferred.)
A knack for trendspotting; you're a zeitgeist expert who brings a unique perspective that can be applied to proactive storytelling.
Prolific writing & editing skills with an appreciation for the Oxford comma.
Curiosity, creative thinking, & a sense of humor.
Passion for addressing economic inequality.
