Managing Editor

The Hachette Book Group is seeking a Managing Editor for its Hachette Books Publishing division. Hachette Books publishes about 100 nonfiction titles a year across a broad range of categories, including business, politics, science, history, health & wellness, pop culture & sports. This position reports to the VP, Executive Managing Editor.

Responsibilities:

  • Work in close partnership with the Hachette Books publisher & the editorial & art teams on seasonal lists to ensure timely delivery of manuscripts, copy, & sales materials
  • Collaborate with the editorial, art, & production departments to schedule & monitor titles through the entire production process
  • Develop or refine procedures to improve existing workflows & ensure that interdepartmental best practices & standards are in maintained
  • Lead production & other status meetings & participate in various interdepartmental meetings
  • Maintain title data & communicate changes companywide
  • Manage a few special book projects (bought bounds, third-party packagers) per season, as necessary

Requirements:

  • 5+ years managing editorial experience, preferably in a trade house
  • Solid knowledge of the entire trade publishing process for narrative nonfiction & illustrated genres
  • Proven communication & interpersonal skills, including diplomacy & an ability to work collegially with a variety of stakeholders & with appropriate assertiveness to ensure deadlines are met
  • Demonstrated team leadership & mentorship skills
  • Solid organizational skills, with an aptitude for process development & innovation
  • Strong computer/MS Word & Excel skills & knowledge of electronic copyediting & coding
  • Solid copyediting & proofreading skills
  • Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style (16th & 17th eds.)
