IDEO.org is a nonprofit design studio on a mission to design a more just & inclusive world. From our offices in the U.S. & Kenya, we partner with organizations working to advance health equity, economic opportunity, & wellbeing in communities around the world co-creating products, services, campaigns, & programs that improve peoples lives.

The Role

We're seeking an equity-centered HR leader to oversee our global Talent team & help build an industry-leading employee experience for our staff of 60 across the U.S. & Kenya. In this role, you will serve as a critical thought partner & collaborator to our extended global leadership team, & oversee a 3-person Talent team that sits across our offices in San Francisco, New York, & Nairobi. With that in mind, were seeking a leader adept at building strong relationships anchored in trust, respect & communication.

To that end, we are looking for someone to join our leadership team who will develop, refine, & oversee implementation of HR processes, policies, & learning experiences that center equity, & reflect the diverse needs of our global community. In addition to overseeing our global Talent team, this person will share accountability with our CEO to deliver on our organizational diversity, equity, & inclusion goalssetting strategy, tracking progress, & supporting other leaders across the organization to operationalize changes that advance equity & belonging at IDEO.org. 

Reporting directly to our CEO, this role is equal parts strategy development, team & people leadership, & rolling up your sleeves to make things happen. Our ideal candidate is someone who thrives in a dynamic, collaborative environment & can easily shift between the big picture (e.g. architecting our part-time employment philosophy) & the details that matter (e.g. coaching individual employees & managers on day-to-day issues).

Responsibilities

Team & Functional Leadership

  • Oversee the full range of HR functions, including recruiting & onboarding, compliance, benefits, compensation, learning & development, & diversity, equity, & inclusionensuring all aspects of the Human Resources function align with & contribute to business objectives.
  • Manage a team of ~3 Talent/HR professionals, providing leadership & mentorship to direct reports with clear direction & regular two-way feedback.
  • Stay informed on best practices through research, industry events, & networking to help the organization design & evolve an industry-leading employee experience.

HR Operations & Compliance

  • Develop & refine organizational policies & procedures in alignment with our organizations values & all legal requirements (including annual Handbook review).
  • Oversee the HRIS & benefits system (Paylocity), identifying & implementing new processes, technologies, & workflows that improve employee experience.
  • Review & strategically enhance employee benefits to support our diverse team, including overseeing annual benefit renewal process & broker relationships.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance of all legal & organizational requirements, standards, & procedures (across U.S. & Kenya), alerting the COO of any actions required.
  • Manage the work authorization process (both domestically & internationally).
  • Lead a biannual compensation & promotion calibration across all functions.
  • Write & deliver internal communications related to HR policies & procedures.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

  • Lead IDEO.orgs internal DEI effortsworking with the CEO to set annual goals to continue progress & tracking results through key metrics. 
  • Apply a DEI lens to all Talent & HR decisions, processes, & policies.
  • Advise & support other department leaders to operationalize key initiatives.

Learning & Development

  • Oversee the performance management process (via CultureAmp).
  • Advise on the design & ongoing execution of L&D practices, including development of internal training sessions (e.g. manager training).

Talent Acquisition

  • Serve as a strategic thought partner to local recruitersensuring open roles are filled efficiently & advising on best practices for hiring & onboarding.
  • Manage end-to-end hiring for executive-level roles.

Employee Relations

  • Provide clear guidance & perspective on how to manage employee relations issuesinvestigating complaints as well as coaching employees, managers, & our leadership team on how to address & resolve issues promptly & effectively. 
  • Keep your finger on the pulse of the organization, supporting employees through hardship, & influencing managers to enact changes that preserve whats unique about our culture while helping us evolve to support the evolving needs of our people.
  • Consult with the legal counsel as required to reduce legal risks & ensure compliance.

Our ideal candidate is

  • A seasoned HR professional (10+ years) with some experience across all core areas of the role (compensation, performance management, employee relations, DEI, learning & development, talent acquisition, etc)
  • Experienced at designing & implementing scalable, high-quality operational HR programs, processes & systems
  • Passionate about our mission to advance justice & inclusion, & experienced in helping translate those values into internal policies & practices
  • Inclusive & decisivesomeone who makes space for multiple perspectives, translating many inputs & considerations into clear & transparent decisions
  • Emotionally intelligent & approachablea natural trust-builder
  • A clear communicator
  • A dedicated coach & mentor with at least 3 years of team & people leadership experience
  • Comfortable in a hybrid digital/in-person work environmentmoving fluidly between digital platforms, including Google Suite, Slack, email, Paylocity, & CultureAmp
  • Experience working cross-culturally or in a creative or nonprofit environment is a plus
