No matter who you are, or where you're from, your earliest experiences learning about Artificial Intelligence (AI) most likely came from watching movies and tv shows.
For almost 100years, Hollywood has created a steady stream of popular movies featuring AI as the main storyline. Although AI has only just recently begun to truly take off(after several false starts), a look back at Hollywood history shows that we havealwaysbeen obsessed with the idea of AI and, as a society, we have explored AIexhaustively, including how it might help or harm humanity, through movies.
Today, as businesses, politicians, and the general publicstruggles to understand the implications of AIon society, and as the big tech companies create consortiums to define AI ethics (see our<A HREF="http://tech2025.com/events/workshop-shining-a-light-on-ai-consortiums-and-big-tech-companies/" TARGET="_blank" REL="noopener noreferrer noopener nofollow noopener noreferrer nofollow nofollow noreferrer nofollow">upcoming workshop</A>), turning a critical eye to representations of AI in pop culture becomes ever-more important and crucial to our understanding of what AI is andisn't.
Machine Learning(a type of artificial intelligence that provides computers with the ability to learn and change when exposed to new data without being explicitly programmed ) has captured the imaginations of countless screenwriters and directors over the past eight decades. Movies likeI Robot,Her,2001 Space Odyssey,The Matrix,Metropolis, and dozens more have defined machine learning technology for people around the world, and the movie studios have been greatly rewarded by audiences with record-breaking ticket sales.
But how accurate are these depictions of Machine Learning in movies we all know and love? How has Hollywood shaped our understanding of AI and machine learning?How has Hollywood's depiction of Machine Learning changed through the years and what can we expect in the near future?
Join us and our special guest presenter,Peter Morgan(Chief AI Scientist,<A HREF="http://ivydatascience.com/" TARGET="_blank" REL="noopener noreferrer noopener nofollow noopener noreferrer nofollow nofollow noreferrer nofollow">Ivy Data Science</A>), for this interactive workshop that willexplore current trends and problems in Machine Learning through the lens of Hollywood films of the past to connect-the-dots of public perceptions versus reality.
Scenes from popular movies will be shown during the workshop. Attendees will participate in interactive, group exercises. Popcorn and soda will be served!

I am a scientist-entrepreneur starting out in high energy physics enrolled in the PhD program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. After leaving UMass, and founding my own company, I moved into computer networks, designing, implementing and troubleshooting global IP networks for companies such as Cisco, IBM and BT Labs. After getting an MBA and dabbling in financial trading algorithms, I worked for three years on an experiment lead by Stanford University to measure the mass of the neutrino. Since 2012 I have been working in Data Science and Deep Learning, founding an AI company in Jan 2016.
As an entrepreneur I have founded companies in the AI, social media, and music industries. I also serve on the advisory board of technology startups. I am a popular speaker at conferences, meetups and webinars.Business experience in USA, UK and Europe.
