FireFly Cinema provides digital color mgmt solns for the movie industry.

Selected for French-American Creative Lab 2017 Program (NYC & LA)
1. What is the elevator pitch for the company?
We create digital color management solutions for the movie industry.
2. Tell us more about the product / service. What problem are you solving?
FireFly Cinema creates digital color management solutions for the movie industry. Used on hundreds of feature films (LA LA Land, Planetarium, The History of Love, Belle and Sebastien), our software ensures that the decisions that are made on movie set by the director about the look and feel of the movie are carried all the way through the post production and finishing processes. Just a few years ago, there wasn't really a great solution for an end-to-end color workflow. Today, with new UHDTV standards that support HDR (High Dynamic Range) and expanded color gamuts, it's really unacceptable to start a film or TV production without having one in place. It's the only way for both the Director of Photography and the Movie Director to be sure that the creative decisions they make on set are faithfully carried through to the final film. However, most color management software available on the market today tends to be complex and highly expensive. Unlike other solutions, the FireFly Cinema applications are built to be faster, less complicated, and more affordable for independent filmmakers as well as big budget features.
3. What inspired you to start the company?
For many years, I worked for cutting edge media companies and was lucky to be involved with particularly innovative projects. When I was with Medialab, a leading post production company in Paris, I built one of the first digital special effect departments in France. In the 2000s, as CTO of the Eclair laboratories, I created one of the top three digital cinema laboratories in the world. The work of Eclair was recognized worldwide, but because of the disappearance of traditional film workflows, conventional production companies started suffering and I could no longer carry out the original vision that I had in mind. So, becoming an entrepreneur in digital film workflows was a natural step and together with my business partner, Luc Guenard, we created FireFly Cinema in order to make our dreams a reality.
4. What market are you targeting & how big is it? Who are the typical customers who would use your product?
We initially targeted the film industry, and TV series, but today the market is much larger than that. Everyone is doing video! Our customers range from big studios and big labs, to small post boutique and even prosumers.
5. How are you different from other companies in this space? What do you think is your competitive advantage?
We are the only one company with a complete workflow from set to post. Including an iPad and web app for review and sharing. And now we have a complete new solution for digital dailies on the cloud: FireCloud. We are also the only color management software that is sold on subscription or SaaS.
6. What is the business model? How do you plan to generate revenues?
For apps such as FireDay (for digital dailies) we offer a subscription model. For Web-based apps (FireVision) we offer a unique SaaS (Software as a Service) licensing model, which means that productions pay only for it only when they need it. Productions are seeking less capital expenses on their books these days, so we've responded to that.
7. Tell us more about the founding team and their background.
Philippe Reinaudo (Co-Founder/CEO) has over 20 years of experience in post-production for film, television and commercials. Prior founding Firefly Cinema in 2010, he was CTO at Paris-based Éclair Laboratories, one of the world's leading digital cinema laboratories. At Éclair, he supervised the finishing process for over 100 feature films. He led the team that created Europe's first digital cinema master (DCP) and implemented the first 4K DI workflow. He has also worked as a special effects supervisor on numerous movies.

Luc Guenard (Co-Founder/CTO) has over 15 years of experience in the film industry. He is the former head of R&D at Éclair Laboratories where he developed his specialized engineering skills in color science. At Éclair, he was in charge of the development of a color grading software and color standardization. Luc is a recognized leader in the art and science of high quality color grading and finishing workflows.
8. Where is the company located? Are you bootstrapped or funded? If funded, who are some of your investors?
We are based in Paris and are privately funded.
9. What are the next steps for the company in the next 12-18 months? And who would you like to connect with?
The creation of audiovisual programs is by definition a team effort. Ever since its creation, the goal of FireFly Cinema has been to offer collaborative tools for creative teams. And we are working on making this even more efficient by using the Cloud. Our objective is that in the next few years, a very large proportion of audiovisual productions will adopt FireFly Cinema's cloud-based solutions to create their programs more efficiently while keeping their production costs low.
